ABOUT ME:

Helping others and research are what I enjoy the most. Whether is by tutoring in science or by helping my lab mates, helping others is part of my life. As of today, I received my BS in Biochemistry and started my Masters. I work for Dr. Karen Lewis in the chemistry and biochemistry department. My research focuses in protein-RNA interactions, especially the interactions between a protein called LARP6 and a 48 nucleotide stem loop form the untranslated region of collagen. On my free time I like to handout with my friends, hear music and play videogames.

Graduated May 2017

Monica Silva

m_s286@txstate.edu

MAJOR:   Masters in Human Nutrition

HOMETOWN:  Bastrop, Texas

ABOUT ME:
Food was at the center of every family gathering I had growing up in rural Central Texas. My mother takes pride in her tamales and enchiladas. My love for food led me to Texas A&M University, where I obtained an undergraduate degree in Food Science and Technology. In Bryan, I had the opportunity to work with underprivileged children in the No Child Left Behind Afterschool Program. I taught the children how the colors of fruits and vegetables were indicative of their health benefits. Along with lectures, they had a chance to cultivate a garden and appreciate the process involved in food production. They were receptive. In a short time, the children asked for healthy recipes to take home and told other students about their garden. I witnessed a transformation in the children and myself. I could not forget that experience. It inspired me to go back to school.

CAREER ASPIRATIONS:
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said, “if your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough.” I have big dreams. Ultimately. my goal is to empower young people to make healthy changes through so they can have a better quality of life. I want to achieve my goal by operating a culinary arts school, getting involved in policy, and developing programs for low income families. I have also become interested in sustainable farming and want to incorporate it into nutrition education. As a USDA SAFE scholar, I have the opportunity to work with the Supplemental Nutrition for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. I assist in research that will provide qualitative information regarding barriers to healthy behavior and technology acceptance. Additionally, I look forward to learning more about food security and safety through the Federal Emergency Management Agency accredited program as well as getting certified by the Department of Homeland Security.
