Ag Education Senior Receives American FFA Degree

Tatum Bauer from Pleasanton, TX. is a senior in Agricultural Education. The American FFA degree is the highest degree achievable in the National FFA Organization, the American FFA Degree shows an FFA member’s dedication to his or her chapter and state FFA association. It demonstrates the effort FFA members apply toward their supervised agricultural experience and the outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement they exhibited through their FFA career. American FFA Degree recipients show promise for the future and have gone above and beyond to achieve excellence. Tatum will be student teaching at McMullen County High School this spring.

SPI Hosts Parasite Detection Workshop

On Saturday, November 2, 2019 the Small Producers Initiative (SPI) hosted a Parasite Detection Workshop for small goat and sheep producers at the Freeman Ranch and Texas State University campus. The workshop was led by Dr. Benavides, Assistant Professor of Animal Science in the Department of Agricultural Sciences, and three of her graduate students: Trixie Wetmore, Collin Hayes, and Meagan Knipp. The goal of the workshop was to provide producers with a hands-on opportunity to practice conducting Fecal Egg Counting (FEC) and FAMACHA scoring on individual fecal samples to help improve goat and sheep production at their own farms. Utilizing FEC with FAMACHA scoring targets only the most infected animals. It can reduce the time and money spent on controlling parasites and reduce the risk of anthelmintic resistance in a herd. Lunch, supplies, and a DIY take-home kit with tons of information were provided to participants. SPI will likely host more of these workshops in early 2020 with the help of Dr. Benavides and her lab.

New Integrated Agricultural Sciences Degree

Texas State University is pleased to announce that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved a new Master of Science degree program with a major in Integrated Agricultural Sciences. The Department of Agriculture in the College of Applied Arts will begin offering the new degree program in fall 2018.

This program’s integrated approach to agricultural sciences combines research and education concerning land use strategies, crop and animal production, distribution, sales, economics, policy, and the environment. The graduates of this program will have the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary to analyze, optimize, and implement complex agro-systems. Through a rigorous interdisciplinary agriculture curriculum and exposure to real-world applications, students will develop technical and leadership skills necessary for an effective career in addressing and solving food and agricultural issues.

New S.A.L.E. Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to the follow New San Antonio Livestock Exposition (S.A.L.E) Scholarship recipients:

Tyler Austin Hornburg, Major in Agriculture with a Minor in Horticulture
Kaitlyn M. Hunt, Major in General Agriculture with Teacher Certification

Education is vital to the continued success of the American agricultural industry. Since inception, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has supported Texas youth by providing a venue for competition and a marketplace for their agricultural and livestock projects.

In 1984, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo’s Executive Committee began encouraging 4-H and FFA students to continue their interest in agricultural careers in college. This led to the creation of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo's Scholarship Fund, which in its first year, awarded 15 four-year scholarships totaling $90,000 to deserving students entering Texas colleges.

From that modest beginning, the program has expanded so that more than 8,500 Texas students have now benefited from the scholarships. Currently, all 254 Texas counties are represented in the program.

Subject to their academic standing, each recipient will receive $16,000 over the next 4 years. Congratulations to Tyler and Kaitlyn.

Beef for Dinner

The AG 4326 Beef Forum was held on December 5, 2017 in Room 204 of the Agriculture Building. The beef for dinner was donated from HeartBrand Beef and PrimeLine Beef. Graduate students in the Department of Agriculture prepared smoked beef cuts and hamburgers for arriving guests.

The Beef Forum was held to offer current undergrad and graduate students an opportunity to visit with industry experts about the current issues impacting the industry. Experts from the following organizations were present.

Organization representatives will be here from: Texas Beef Council (Austin); King Ranch (Kingsville); Brangus Association (San Antonio); HeartBrand Beef (Flatonia); Independent Cattlemen’s Association (Lockhart); and PrimeLine Beef (Grandview).
